B.O.!!

Body oder: Let’s face it, people are starting to smell a little bit as puberty hits. And yes, you are a member of those “people.” What’s the deal? Where did that smell come from and what can you do about it?

B.O. is caused when bacteria that naturally live on your body start to break down your sweat into acids… giving off that unpleasant odor. It’s NOT sweat that smells, it’s the bacteria breaking down the sweat the smells. Some conditions may make this break down worse: spicy foods, obesity and even diabetes can make a person more susceptible to B.O..

DID YOU KNOW? Bromhidrosis: foul smelling perspiration.

What can you do to make it better?

  • Keep your ARMPITS clean. Armpits have a lot of apocrine glands (see Did You Know below) so washing well with soap can help. Also, HAIR traps moisture giving the bacteria more time to break down the sweat… so shaving can help. Finally, a good deodorant can help. Deodorants make the area more acidic, making it more difficult for bacteria to thrive.

DID YOU KNOW? The body has 3-4 MILLION sweat glands. There are two types: Eccrine glands which are almost everywhere there is skin, and apocrine glands in the breast, genital areas, eyelids (! Who knew?!), armpits and ears (! Again, who knew?!).  The sweat from apocrine glands is high in protein, which bacteria love… hence these areas tend to be the stinky ones. Eccrine glands make sweat that is high in salt which bacteria don’t love so much.

  • Take a shower at least once a day with soap and warm water to help remove bacteria from the skin.

DID YOU KNOW? Deodorants keep you from smelling: de-odor. Antiperspirants keep you from sweating: anti-perspire. Sweating is good for the body, so we recommend the former (first), preferably a natural deodorant without aluminum chloride which has been linked to cancer. Read labels.

  • Avoid spicy foods… yep. They tend to make your sweat smell more. But they can be good for you, too. And good-tasting.. So balance and awareness are key.

B.O. of the feet? Of the mouth? Ewww, we know, but to avoid them, read the next post on two more smelly issues.

You have too clean yourself and its better to shave because hair produces more sweat. You can also wear deodorant so your armpits won’t stink.
